Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis is determined to exit Hollywood on her own terms. At 66, Jamie Lee has been a fixture in the entertainment industry for nearly five decades.

Born into Hollywood royalty as the daughter of legendary actors Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, she was no stranger to the spotlight. But she carved her own path early on, making her film debut at 19 in John Carpenter’s 1978 horror classic “Halloween.”

Her role as Laurie Strode launched her into stardom and earned her the title of “scream queen,” which she solidified with a string of successful horror films throughout the ’80s.

Though she became widely recognized for her work in thrillers, Jamie Lee has shown remarkable range over the years. From comedies like “A Fish Called Wanda” to heartfelt dramas and her Oscar-winning performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” she has consistently evolved while staying true to herself.

Still, Jamie Lee has long been thinking about how and when she might step away from the industry that shaped her life. Despite her continued success, Jamie Lee has admitted she’s been quietly preparing for retirement for decades.

“I’ve been self-retiring for 30 years,” she said in an interview, revealing her desire to step back before Hollywood forces her out. For her, it’s about control and dignity.
With a slate of projects, including a reunion with Lindsay Lohan in “Freakier Friday,” Jamie Lee isn’t done yet, but she knows exactly how she wants to bow out.

In an interview with The Guardian, Jamie Lee reflected on how watching her parents navigate fame shaped her own perspective on show business and stepping away from it. She shared:

“I witnessed my parents lose the very thing that gave them their fame and their life and their livelihood, when the industry rejected them at a certain age... And that’s very painful.”

Starring with Lohan in “Freakier Friday,” Jamie Lee said she’s been “self-retiring for 30 years” and “prepping to get out, so that I don’t have to suffer the same as my family did.” She added:

“I want to leave the party before I’m no longer invited.”

Though retirement is on her radar, Jamie Lee is currently focused and empowered by the work ahead. Feeling like “a boss,” she’s fully owning her presence in the industry, and she doesn’t shy away from setting boundaries. She stated:

“And I have no problem saying: ‘Back the f--- off.’”

Other projects have allowed Jamie Lee to explore more creative ground and show her range. Speaking about her role on the acclaimed TV show “The Bear” as an alcoholic, she said it was anything but traumatizing:

“Here’s what’s traumatic: not being able to express your range as an artist. That’s traumatic...”

She added that it was limiting to be confined to a narrow palette of emotional work.

“For me, it was an unleashing of 50 years of being a performer who was never considered to have any range,” she explained.

With the freedom given by creator Christopher Storer and the writing, she said that “it was exhilarating” and that “it took no toll.”
