Jamie Lee Curtis has recently opened up about her past struggles with addiction in a new magazine feature on famous people and their recovery stories. In it, she says that she used to do drugs with her dad Tony Curtis.

She sat down with reporters from Variety to speak about her little-known addiction to painkillers and alcohol that she even kept from her husband and children. She was a high-functioning addict but would pop pills with alcohol throughout the day.

Jamie Lee initially started taking painkillers after she was prescribed Vicodin after plastic surgery. The addiction spiralled until she knew it was becoming a problem. She finally got help in 1999 when she read an article written by a painkiller-addict, which inspired her to start her recovery process and go to meetings. She has been sober ever since.

Unfortunately, addiction runs in her family. Her father, Tony Curtis, was known for his roles in “Some Like It Hot” and “Spartacus,” and became a hugely successful star. He had a tumultuous life and fathered six children with six wives, and was an addict himself.

Jamie told the publication that there was a point where she was the only child speaking to him because of his addiction to alcohol, cocaine, and heroin. But that was what also brought the two of them together.

“I did cocaine and freebased once with my dad,” she stated to Variety. “But that was the only time I did that, and I did that with him. He did end up getting sober for a short period of time and was very active in recovery for about three years. It didn’t last that long. But he found recovery for a minute.”

Unlike her father, Jamie Lee stayed sober. The interview also goes in-depth about her path to recovery and the successes she has had over the last 20 years.
