Brolin was previously married twice before. First, he was married to Jane Cameron Agee, with whom he had two sons Josh and Jess Brolin. It all started on a blind date in 1996. Streisand did not have high hopes and was not looking to marry again. But from the start, humor and honesty punctuated their relationship.

Before the date, Brolin had cut his trademark long hair and beard. Barbara recounted to W Magazine that she was so surprised she said, “Who screwed up your hair?” Brolin was smitten with her candor and sparks flew at this first dinner. They both new in a matter of months that this relationship was special.

Getting Hitched

Two years later on their anniversary, the couple were married. According to People, Streisand sang two songs at the celebration, and Brolin gave his infamous speech saying, "I can’t tell you how lucky I am that this would happen to me so late in life. Every night is a new adventure. Sleeping is a waste of time. I can’t wait to see her again in the morning."

The two celebrities had a small wedding full of other famous people: from Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson to Quincy Jones, Sydney Pollack, John Travolta and Kelly Preston.

Streisand credits their successful relationship to "kindness" as she told Extra. She believes this simple advice can help couples keep their own relationships flourishing. The 77-year-old said:

"The Dalai Lama says, 'Give truth with compassion...' I used to use truth as a weapon years ago, actually, 'Well, you look fat 'cause you’re fat... I’m telling you the truth.' Truth with compassion would say it a different way — I don’t think you can take each other for granted.”

Brolin has seen a lot of his past relationships falter because of finances and busy schedules. This is why they take care to always make time for one another. Neither person is ready to give up their career, so they tend to be quite busy. Brolin told Fox News that they always find time to see one another no matter how busy they are.

Neither person has sacrificed their career or independence either. Brolin told HuffPost Live the couple both have their own money and try to maintain that independence so things do not get complicated.

Regular Couple's Counseling

Brolin told Entertainment Tonight that Streisand likes having a "referee" when they want to talk through ideas or want to enhance their communication skills. Streisand is widely known for her sharp honesty.

"I do believe in counseling if anybody ever has a problem in their marriage. Bring in a referee, talk it over, and I swear to you, it will dispel by the end of the session, each time," Broline said. "Sometimes in a tough marriage, it’s tough to talk, but if you do, it works,"
