Jack Schlossberg Carries JFK’s Legacy With A Family Heirloom He Wears For ‘Good Luck’

Jack Schlossberg had a meaningful way of carrying his family’s history into public life: by wearing one of President John F. Kennedy’s ties.

Schlossberg, who is a Democrat running for Congress in New York’s 12th District, according to his official campaign website, has often been associated with the Kennedy family’s public legacy. Yet his story about the tie gave that legacy a more intimate quality. Instead of describing a grand family treasure, he highlighted a simple item of clothing that connects him to his grandfather in a direct and visible way.

During an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live,” the 33-year-old grandson of JFK spoke with Andy Cohen while dressed in a navy suit, pale blue shirt and blue patterned tie. When Cohen asked whether Schlossberg had a favorite heirloom from his grandfather or from his late uncle, John F. Kennedy Jr., Schlossberg pointed to the accessory around his neck.

“This is my favorite tie. It’s JFK’s tie,” he said.

The tie is not merely a collector’s item. For Schlossberg, it has become a personal symbol of encouragement and continuity.

“I wear it for good luck,” he said.

He also joked that the interview itself was a major occasion, telling Cohen, “Today was a big day for me because I am with Andy Cohen. That’s the coolest.”

Although Schlossberg has appeared at multiple formal events and campaign stops, he described his wardrobe as surprisingly limited.

“I have five ties. I only wear five ties ever,” he told Cohen. “This is one of them.”

The JFK tie has appeared during several meaningful public moments. Schlossberg wore it in 2013 when his mother, Caroline Kennedy, attended her confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee after being nominated to serve as U.S. ambassador to Japan. The committee hearing is documented by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Caroline served as U.S. ambassador to Japan from 2013 to 2017 and later as U.S. ambassador to Australia.

The tie has also been connected to the Kennedy family’s ongoing civic work. In 2023, Schlossberg and other family members participated in the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award ceremony, an annual program organized by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.

When Cohen asked about heirlooms from John F. Kennedy Jr., Schlossberg said he had fewer items from his late uncle.

“I have like a watch that doesn’t work,” he said.

He added:

“He lost most of his clothes apparently. He was given a lot of like JFK heirlooms, and I think he lost them all.”

John F. Kennedy Jr. died in 1999 in a plane crash near Martha’s Vineyard, along with his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and her sister, Lauren Bessette. Interest in his style and public image has remained strong, but Schlossberg’s favorite family item is much simpler: a tie worn not as a museum piece, but as part of his own public uniform.

For Schlossberg, the accessory seems to carry both memory and motivation. It links one generation of the Kennedy family to another while giving him what he calls “good luck” as he steps further into public life.
