I’ve Seen Thousands Of Commercials In My Life And This Is The Only One I Ever Cry Over

At Christmas time, there's joy all around. Some people are glad to finally get some time off work and spend the holidays with their families. The kids can't wait to get their presents. Others are excited to finally spend quality time with their friends. Personally, I enjoy the commercials during that time of the year.

Big corporate firms spend millions of dollars to encourage us to shop and keep up with the spirit of Saint Nick. Since most of them know that the competition is tough, they go out of their way to come up with unique adverts. One, in particular from 2018 caught the attention of millions of viewers and its lasting impact is still going strong.

The ad is by Bouygues, a French telecom company that always insists on the importance of family values and maintaining communication with your loved ones through their ads. Their Christmas commercial from that year was along the same lines, but it made viewers cry because of how touching it was.

The advertisement started with a father playing with his young son, who was still a baby, while the song "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone played. The father did a goofy little dance for his son, which was his way of bonding with him and making him smile. He does this all through his son's life via a series of time jumps.

In the next scene, the son is a young boy and he and his father heard the song coming from a store while they were out Christmas shopping.

Following that, the father and son heard the song in the car. At that point, the father is slightly older while the son is a teenager. The scene after that showed the boy a little older again and that time he was rather embarrassed at his aging dad's moves, while he danced in public in a cafe.

But the final scene is the most touching. As the father, who is grey-haired by that point, sat with his wife in their living room, a vibrating sound came from one of the Christmas presents under the tree. After he opened the box to reveal a smartphone that his son was calling him on, the son — who was then all grown up with a baby of his own — appeared on the other end as he played the song back to his father. The message is simple but incredibly heartfelt.

Bouygues received so much praise for the ad on social media, especially from parents. They said that it helped them bond with their children. The main message of the ad is that we should offer more than technology for Christmas. Rather, we should take out our phones and use them to appreciate all those we love, especially those that took care of us when we were young.

Although it's from a few years ago, the ad's message is timeless. And people on the internet certainly agree. It's since been viewed over 1.4 million times on YouTube with views still coming in. People commented on how much the ad meant to them and the memories it recalled of their own childhoods.

People on social media fell absolutely in love with the ad. The account that uploaded it wrote:

"As a son, a parent, a grandfather, and a marketer, this ad completely resonates with me on all perspectives!"

Another user wrote:

"As a dad myself, this reminds me of what being a 'daddy' is all about. To all you dads out there, cherish each moment with your children, especially during the holidays."

Meanwhile, others wrote about how many times they'd rewatched it. One user said, "It doesn't matter how many times I've seen this, when it pops up in my suggested videos, I have to watch it again!" Another said, "Watched this a zillion times. Can't help myself. It is SO dear."

Other people wrote about the times they also embarrassed their loved ones with silly dancing, while others wished they could still do the same with their lost loved ones. A running thread was the fact that the ad made many people cry. One person wrote:

"The Best comercial....just make me cry of joy......to hear that song and see that sweet dad...Precioso precioso....."

Meanwhile, another said:

"Who else is crying after watching this commercial? So sweet."

Bouygues' commercial is still incredibly powerful because it speaks to what makes us human. It's ultimately not really selling a product, but rather reminding us of what's most important in life. Christmas is a time for family and those we love and this ad is a great reminder of that. So go ahead and do the same if you haven't already. Spread the joy.
