It’s So Cold In The Midwest That The Subzero Temperatures Are Transforming Boiling Water Into Snow

The polar vortex has plundered the midwestern United States with subzero temperatures. When Illinois and Iowa are colder than Antarctica or Siberia, you know it's serious. In fact, it's so cold right in parts of the Midwest that literal boiling water is being turned to solid ice.

Winter isn't coming, it's here. With over 200 million Americans bracing against well-below-freezing temps, it's safe to say that Jack Frost is having the time of his life right now.

With the weather plunging below -20 degrees, people are in awe of the shocking conditions.

Some are taking to the internet to test out some home-based science experiments that show the world just how cold it really is right now.

Olha Hamoli and her boyfriend, Dmytro Pavlichenko, captured an incredible moment that seems impossible - boiling water freezing into rock-hard ice in a matter of seconds.

Olha, 25, lives in Chigaco and has never experienced such cold in her life.

In a video that's been viewed thousands of times online, Olha tosses a pot of boiling water over her head, only to have it crystalize into shimmering ice before her eyes.

"I’d seen a video like this before but in Siberia or Antarctica, and I decided to try it to see if our weather was that bad. It turns out it was! It has been unexpectedly cold with very harsh Arctic wind."

While these experiments might look fun, Olha reminds people that the weather is, indeed, dangerous.

"Our building heating system collapsed due to such low temperatures. The weather is so bad that it's better to not go outside until it improves."
