It's Very Possible The Queen Has Never Eaten Pizza As Stated By Her Former Royal Chef

The royal family seemingly has anything they want at their disposal and this extends to food. With private chefs cooking for them, they could have anything they want, whenever they want.

But a recent interview with the Queen's former personal chef has revealed that Her Majesty simply isn't a fan of pizza, having never asked for it to be made. In fact, it seems the Queen may never have even eaten pizza in her life before! 

Former royal chef Darren McGrady spoke with Us Food in August 2020 and revealed some of the inner workings of his 15-year tenure cooking for the royal family. He said:

"In the years that I cooked at [Buckingham] palace, the Queen never had pizza. I didn't start cooking pizza until I moved across to Kensington palace."

It's not to say she didn't necessarily eat pizza at all in those years, but definitely not on Chef McGrady's watch. A life without pizza seems a life not fully lived, but knowing what the Queen has access to, it's likely she's just more interested in foods that us mere mortals could only dream of having someone cook up for us.

Interestingly, Kate Middleton spoke about the topic as well in January 2019, when she visited King Henry's Walk Garden in Islington, London, and ended up having a pizza-making session with a group of school kids.

Us Food reports that one of the children asked the Duchess of Cambridge if the Queen had ever eaten pizza, to which Kate replied:

“You know, that’s such a good question. I don’t know. I don’t know. Maybe next time I see her, shall I ask?”

If the Queen's personal chef of 15 years was never asked to make pizza for Her Majesty and her granddaughter-in-law can't recall ever seeing her eat pizza, then the chances seem quite good that the Queen simply doesn't eat the popular food.

Kate has a differing opinion on pizza it seems, saying that she is a fan of the Italian dish and enjoys eating it with bacon on top or "some other meat." Kate's husband Prince William is also an avid pizza lover it seems, with Chef McGrady spending the last four years of his tenure as a royal chef working at Kensington palace and cooking for the late Princess Diana and her young sons at the time. Apparently pizza was frequently on the menu over there, with Prince William a big fan. McGrady told Us Food in the same interview:

"I [made] pizza all the time for William. In my second cookbook, The Royal Chef at Home, there’s a chicken tikka masala pizza [recipe] because he loves Indian food. The pizza combined the two."

Pizza and Indian food both sound like staples in a modern diet, yet who knows if the Queen has tried either of them. For now, the mystery of whether Her Majesty has tried one of Italy's national foods remains unsolved.
