Instagrammers Have Destroyed The California Superbloom By Stomping All Over The Flowers
May 03, 2019 by apost team
Heavy rains in California brought a few unexpected surprises this spring. The seven-year drought plaguing the state is officially over thanks to torrential downpours. Rain filled the reservoirs and bolstered the snowpacks in high elevations.
It also turned the formerly dry, brown landscape of Southern California a stunning green. Even better, poppies are, well, popping up everywhere. Fields are filled with what's being called a wildflower super bloom.
Because they lacked rain, the flowers were dormant for years. Thanks to a wet winter season, the poppies are finally blooming. The state flower is turning the hills and valleys lovely shades of orange, yellow, pink, and green

Naturally, people are eager to hike through the many trails that dot the landscape. Who wouldn't want to walk a trail that leads through a sea of colorful flowers?
If people were satisfied with simply walking past the blooms and enjoying the scenery, that would be fine. Unfortunately, the allure of the selfie is too strong for many of them. There are Instagram followers to consider, after all. A pic taken amongst the poppies garners lots of likes and comments.
Oh, and it's also killing all the flowers. By walking over, sitting on, or otherwise disturbing the poppies, these Instagrammers are ruining future super blooms. The flowers they squash likely won't blossom again.
Don't forget that these poppies waited through seven years of drought to bloom...and now they're being trampled for a few shares on social media.
It's gotten so bad that California officials are closing trails and even entire parks in an attempt to preserve what's left of the super bloom.
In a month or so, Southern California will return to its former flowerless glory. In the meantime, please stay on the trails!
