The Australian wildfires have devastated the pristine beauty of the "Land Down Under." Some of the fires have burned an area larger than the borough of Manhattan, reports CNN. Brutally high temperatures and minimal rainfall have contributed to the disaster. While the wildfires may be destructive for homes and businesses in Australia, it has also scarred the country’s amazing flora and fauna.

According to the Metro, officials from the Australian government estimate that around half a million animals have died in the blaze. In one harrowing moment, a social media star who now serves as a volunteer firefighter, recorded himself saving a baby kangaroo from the flames.

Sam McGlone is a travel filmmaker with over 100,000 followers on Instagram. Like many Australians, Sam was heartbroken by the plight the animals faced in the fires and volunteered as a firefighter to combat the blaze. When he was battling a fire near Braidwood in New South Wales, Sam happened upon a baby kangaroo and did all in his power to help the stricken creature.

The sweet joey was hiding in some bushes near a tree just feet away from the harsh flames. Sam put down his firefighter hose and grabbed the little one, who at first struggled against his rescuer. Sam took the baby, who quickly calmed down, back to his truck. Wrapping the animal in a towel, Sam and his fellow volunteers gave the baby a drink of water.

Later in the video, Sam can be seen carrying the little guy close to chest, bringing him away from the evil blaze. The video cuts out as Sam tells the joey, “Don’t worry, I’ve got you now.”

Sam posted the video to his Instagram page, where it has already received over 90,000 likes. In the thousands of comments attached to post, Sam’s followers hail him as a hero for saving the joey. Sam reminds his followers that 10 million acres of Australia are on fire and that they need to do whatever they can to help fight the blaze.

Later on, Sam posted a link to a GoFundMe page he created to support the animals injured in the fires. Thus far, Sam’s page has generated over $37,000. Speaking with the Metro newspaper, Sam says that hundreds of animals are injured, and they need sponsors to help feed them and get them medical treatment. The young filmmaker stated in his Instagram post that the situation is dire. During another journey into the woods to look for injured animals, Sam discovered that trees have been so badly damaged that they are simply falling over.
