Life has been anything but easy for Nanita Ronquillo. She has not made much money in her life while selling fish. However, that did not mean the woman did not want to provide the best life possible for her son.

Nanita would struggle for years and proved herself to be tougher than the circumstances of her life. The 55-year-old woman can now proudly boast that she was able to send her son, John Nico Ronquillo, to medical school despite her hardships.

It is still dark out each morning when Nanita leaves for the market. Her job is tough and on many days she is exhausted and wishes she could sleep a little longer. Nanita persevered and carved out the best life she could for herself and her son.

Nanita was forced to do it on her own. She left her husband the day she learned he was a cheater and had an entirely different family in another part of town. She secured a job selling fish and never looked back.

Her days do not end until late in the day. Especially, when there is still fish to sell. Nanita cooks dinner for her family when she returns home, cleans herself up for the bed, and is up in the wee hours of the morning to do it again.

Nanita never regretted the decisions she made to take care of John. She says it was her job to pave a way for him. She also never missed a chance to encourage him that all his dreams were within his reach.

There were good days when she would earn nearly $20. But there were days also when her pay was next to nothing. There were even times John could not attend school because there was no money for tuition.

In the end, it took him six years but John finished the four-year course.

Nanita, who also suffers from a heart condition, never wavered in her commitment to her son. Now he wears the title of doctor before his name. And he is just as committed to repaying his mother for all she has done for him.
