Insider Claimed Princess Catherine Was ‘Seriously Unwell’ Before Surgery & Is ‘Fortunate’ To Be In Recovery

In 2024, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, faced one of the most difficult chapters of her public life, as serious health issues forced her out of the spotlight. What began as a hospital stay for abdominal surgery in January ultimately led to a cancer diagnosis. Though she initially kept her condition closely guarded, new insights are now emerging that reveal just how severe her illness truly was.

At the time, a royal insider told The Sunday Times that the Wales family had adopted a new approach: “100% family first, day job second.” Palace aides emphasized that Catherine would remain out of the public eye for a while but would likely continue working privately. Two months post-surgery, the Princess shared that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy, which she described as “really tough.”

Throughout the year, she maintained a low profile, stepping out only for significant events such as Trooping the Colour and Wimbledon. Then, in September 2024, she delivered uplifting news via a video message: she had completed chemotherapy and was now cancer-free. She described her journey as “complex, scary and unpredictable.”

Ailsa Anderson, former press secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth II, noted the Princess was steadily improving, saying: “each time we see her, she’s looking better and better.”

Since then, Catherine has slowly returned to royal duties, marking a hopeful step forward after a deeply challenging year. But how difficult was that year behind the scenes?

In an article for MailOnline published on June 23, 2025, royal correspondent Rebecca English shed light on just how severe Princess Catherine’s health struggles were in 2024.

While stopping short of sharing specific details, English wrote:

“As I have previously revealed, the princess was seriously unwell in the run-up to her surgery in the first place.”

She continued:

“And while that is a story only for her to tell – if she ever chooses to do so – I can say that, from what I understand, she is fortunate to even be speaking of recovery.”

One year after undergoing abdominal surgery, Princess Catherine visited the Royal Marsden Hospital, the very same hospital where she herself had received treatment. Reflecting on her progress, the Princess shared:

“It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery. As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal.”

She added with optimism:

“I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”

Despite her recovery, the Princess continues to navigate the balance between health and public duties. On June 18, 2025, she unexpectedly withdrew from a scheduled appearance at Royal Ascot. Sources reported that Catherine was disappointed not to attend the renowned event in Berkshire, as she continues adjusting to her post-treatment pace of life.

While her path back to full health has been gradual, her continued resilience and honesty have made her return to public engagements all the more meaningful.
