Inside Prince William & Princess Catherine’s Elegant Buckingham Palace Garden Party

Prince William and Princess Catherine hosted their first Buckingham Palace garden party of 2026 on May 8, representing King Charles III and Queen Camilla at one of the monarchy’s most cherished public-service traditions. The Prince and Princess of Wales welcomed about 8,000 guests to the palace gardens, where honorees were recognized for their work in local communities, charities, the Armed Forces, public service and voluntary organizations.
The event followed the first Buckingham Palace garden party of the 2026 season, hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla on May 6. Royal garden parties have been part of royal life since the reign of Queen Victoria in the 1860s, and more than 30,000 guests are invited each year to events at Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, according to the Royal Family.
William and Catherine were joined by Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, as well as Zara Tindall. After the National Anthem marked the formal opening, the royals moved through the garden to meet guests and hear about their work. Catherine wore a cream-and-black Self-Portrait look with a vintage Mitzi Lorenz hat, Queen Elizabeth II’s Bahrain pearl drop earrings and Princess Diana’s pearl bracelet, giving the afternoon a blend of modern polish and royal history.
The elegant setting also carried a deeper purpose: bringing public attention to people whose dedication often happens far from cameras, red carpets and palace balconies. For guests, the invitation served as formal recognition from the Crown, turning personal effort into a national moment of gratitude.

The garden party placed special emphasis on causes connected to the Prince and Princess of Wales, including bereavement support, mental health, military service and rural life. Among the invited guests was Rhian Mannings MBE, founder of 2wish, a charity that supports families after the sudden death of a child or young adult aged 25 or under. Her work is rooted in the loss of her son George and her husband Paul, whose deaths shaped her mission to ensure bereaved families receive immediate support.
Another guest was Sam Stables, co-founder of We Are Farming Minds, with his wife, Emily. The Herefordshire-based charity works to reduce stigma around mental health in farming communities and offers practical support to people in agriculture who may be facing isolation, stress or emotional strain. Their work fits closely with Prince William’s long-standing interest in mental health and the couple’s broader focus on family wellbeing.
There was also a creative presence at the event, with designer and “The Great British Sewing Bee” presenter Patrick Grant seen speaking with the Princess of Wales. His appearance added a lighter cultural moment to an afternoon centered on service and resilience.
For William and Catherine, the engagement continued their role as senior royals who combine ceremonial duties with personally meaningful causes. The couple also hosted a Buckingham Palace garden party in May 2025, when guests included the family of the late photographer Liz Hatton, whom they had previously met at Windsor Castle.
With tea, cakes and conversations under the trees, the Buckingham Palace garden party offered a graceful reminder of the purpose behind the tradition: honoring people whose dedication strengthens communities beyond the royal spotlight. It was a polished royal occasion, but its strongest message was simple: service, compassion and community remain at the heart of the monarchy’s public-facing work.
