Cher and Meryl Streep are still good friends after nearly four decades of knowing each other. Given that long-lasting friendships are a rarity in Hollywood, we’ll take a look at the beginnings of Cher and Streep’s 38-year-long "sisterhood," as well as what the two women have been up to together in the past few years.

If you need proof that Cher and Streep are close, just think back to 2018 when the two celebrities walked the red (or, in this case, blue) carpet for the Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again world premiere in London. As Vanity Fair reports, the two walked the carpet together and then kissed. That may seem like a bit much for a friendship, but keep in mind that Streep and Cher have known each other for nearly four decades ever since the two met on the set of the 1983 biographical drama Silkwood, which was based on a true story.

In the film’s titular role, Streep played Karen Silkwood, a nuclear plant worker turned whistleblower. Meanwhile, Cher plays Karen’s best friend. And while the friendship might have begun on screen, the two quickly got along off-camera as well. In an interview with People, according to IMDB, Cher admitted that the first time she met Streep, she was nervous.

"I thought it was going to be like having an audience with the Pope," Cher told the magazine.

But Streep wasted no time putting her co-star at ease. "The first day on location," Cher told People, "Meryl just came up, threw her arms around me and said, 'I'm so glad you're here.' She's all communication and warmth and friendship with a great sense of humor."

And since then, their friendship has only grown. Another highlight from their 38-year-long friendship came just a few years later when Cher won Best Actress at the 1988 Oscars for her role in Moonstruck. According to Vanity Fair, Cher was competing in the same category against Streep for her role in Ironweed. But despite competeting against each other, Streep was one of the first to jump up and celebrate when Cher’s name was called as the winner.

What’s more, Cher gave Streep a shoutout in her acceptance speech, saying: “I feel so unbelievable that I did my first movie with [Meryl], and now I was nominated with her, and I feel really thankful.”

More recently, the two starred alongside each other in the Mamma Mia sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in 2018. It seems that while Cher did turn down a role in the first film, she couldn’t pass up a second opportunity to star alongside her good friend.

In an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly this year, a friend of the two celebrities opened up as to why they get along together so well.

“They both have wicked senses of humor, are brutally honest and are true artists,” the friend told Closer. “They understand and respect each other,” the friend added. “There has never been a competitive actress thing between them.”
