No one would be surprised to hear that the maternity ward of a hospital sees a large number of babies over the course of a year. However, a hospital in Michigan was shocked by the number of babies they saw a year ago.

Thirty-two may not seem like a lot of births for a hospital in a year. This is true until you understand the 32 births were not from patient's who entered the hospital for care. Instead, the 32 births were the babies of workers at the hospital.

Gabbi Sunder is one of the new moms working for the hospital. She says the number of births in 2018 among workers has caused much conversation. She said there was a real sense of camaraderie among workers who shared their maternity stories on a daily basis.

Ashley Thoennes is a nurse at the hospital and the mother of the 21st of the 32 babies that were born to the workers. She said it helped during her pregnancy to have people around her who could relate to what she was going through.

The number of babies being born over the year caused the announcements to seem almost like a daily occurrence. The mom of baby number 11, health coordinator Gabrielle Sunder, says it began to feel like there was another protruding belly each time she walked along a hospital hallway.

Once the announcements were mostly over and the women were participating in daily belly comparisons, the workers became anxious to see which of the babies would make their way into the world next.

Nurse Kallyne Harren explains the women kept a whiteboard in the breakroom. One of the first things they would do upon arriving at work for their shifts was to check the board for a new name.

Fadumo Hassan says some of the women were on the job when they felt their first contractions. She said she was forced to end her shift early the day she went into labor. The nurse who relieved her was also expecting a child. She said a patient asked, "is everyone pregnant?"

Hassan says she and her coworkers have heard all the jokes regarding the high number of pregnancies. She says her favorite one is about not drinking the water to avoid becoming pregnant.
