At the end of September, news broke that Starstruck Management Group had filed a lawsuit against singer Kelly Clarkson for $1.4 million in unpaid commissions. Starstruck Management Group, which has represented Clarkson for more than a decade, is headed by Narvel Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson’s former father-in-law.

According to Variety, the lawsuit, filed on September 29 in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleges that Clarkson has failed to pay the management company commissions for her work on television, namely The Voice and The Kelly Clarkson Show.

“Over the course of approximately 13 years, Starstruck developed Clarkson into a mega superstar,” the lawsuit reads, according to Variety. “By way of example only, Starstruck was instrumental in helping Clarkson achieve success in terms of numerous hit albums, multiple Grammy wins and nominations, her role on popular television shows like ‘The Voice’ and her own talk show. Despite Starstruck’s hard work and dedication, Clarkson has decided she is going to stop paying Starstruck for what is contractually owed.”

Variety further reports that Clarkson and Starstruck Management Group had an agreement — various outlets have reported that the agreement was verbal — in which the 38-year-old singer would pay 15 percent commission on her gross earnings. Starstruck’s complaint claims that while Clarkson has paid the company $1.9 million in 2020, she owes an additional $1.4 million on top of these payments.

Founded in 1988, Starstruck Entertainment is a talent management agency that represents singers, producers, and other music industry professionals, including Blake Shelton, Brynn Cartelli, and Cale Dodds. The company also happens to be run by Narvel Blackstock, the father of Clarkson’s ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. Blackstock and Clarkson married in 2013, Variety reports, and the couple filed for divorce earlier this year.

"As you probably know, 2020 has brought a lot of change also to my personal life," Clarkson said on The Kelly Clarkson Show following news of her divorce. "Definitely didn't see anything coming that came, but what I'm dealing with is hard — it involves more than just my heart, it involves a lot of little hearts."

"We know the best thing here is to protect our children and their little hearts," she continued during the show. "So I'm usually very open, and I usually talk about everything, but in this case I will talk a little bit here and there about how it affects me personally, but probably won't go too far into it because I'm a mama bear and my kids come first."

People Magazine reportedly reached out to Clarkson for comment on September 30, but the singer’s spokesperson did not immediately respond. At the time of publishing this article, Clarkson also hasn’t said anything on social media. The 38-year-old pop star and Blackstock have had two children together — 6-year-old River Rose and 4-year-old Remington Alexander.
