The Gentlemen of the College are the signature a capella group at The College of William and Mary. They are known for their novelty ties and fancy suits. Although they primarily sing barbershop-style, The Gentlemen of College can also break out pop favorites.

This group keep audiences entertained with silly sketches in between songs. Their skills have taken them to the White House and even Buckingham Palace! Sometimes, though, the most powerful acts are stripped down.

One of their latest YouTube uploads is set in a dorm hallway. The men all stand in formation with their heads down. This instantly sets a somber mood. The man standing in front starts to sing "The Sound of Silence." This is one of Simon & Garfunkel's iconic songs. It was first released back in the 1960s. Although the duo no longer sing together, their music lives on.

Now, The Gentlemen of the College have brought it to a new generation.

It's the setting that makes all the difference. The dorm hallway is dimly lit which puts all the focus on the singers. It also provides a great echoing effect. What's already a moving song becomes even more powerful. When the rest of the group join in harmony, you're sure to get goosebumps! It almost sounds like they're singing in a church.

The Gentlemen of the College put a fresh spin on the music. They speed up the tempo and give the song fresh energy. The lead singer starts belting with his fellow group members back him up.

Then, just as suddenly, they slow back down. The group linger on the lyrics as if to emphasize them. Not that they should worry: we're hung on their every word. It really makes us want to explore the rest of their catalogue!

What do you think of their rendition? Does it measure up to the original? Let us know in the comments and pass this along to a friend or family member who would love to see this!
