Sometimes when you are lucky life brings you a once-in-a-million opportunity. But, what if life brought you something better. What if life brought you a once-in-a-billion opportunity? For a woman named Thelma Chiaka that is exactly what happened. When Chiaka found out she was pregnant, she said her husband initially thought they would be having quadruplets because that is what their initial scans showed.

However, upon arriving at the hospital in March of 2019, the couple found out they wouldn’t be having four babies but a total of six babies, sextuplets. The chance the mother would have sextuplets was a one in 4.7 billion chance. Chiaka delivered her six babies at the Women’s Hospital of Texas where all hands were on deck at the Texas hospital. Chiaka delivered her sextuplets between 4:50 a.m. and 4:59 a.m.

Delivering two sets of twin boys and one set of twin girls, Chiaka’s babies' measured between 1 pound and 12 ounces to 2 pounds and 14 ounces at the time of birth. Upon delivery on March 15, all six of the babies spent time in the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit for as little as a month.

Suffering from an uneasy pregnancy, she ultimately delivered six healthy children. After leaving the hospital, the mother of six opened up and told the world that at first, she was nervous about having six babies but that she wouldn’t have it any other way. The Women's Hospital of Texas said it was an all-hands-on-deck delivery day but that Chiaka was a champion through the whole experience.

“I was excited but at the same time nervous on how to take care of six babies,” Chiaka told Good Morning America about becoming a mother to sextuplets in an exclusive interview.

Chiaka’s doctor praised the new mom of six. “She was a champion because she kept her smile until the last minute. It wasn’t an easy pregnancy on her but she did wonderful,” her doctor said. He went on to say the process wouldn’t have been as smooth without the all-hands-on-deck mentality.

“With the NICU efforts, with the leaderships, with the nurses, with all helping each other —it was great teamwork and I’m very proud to be part of it,” he added.

Chiaka told Good Morning America she is grateful the experience went smoothly. “Well I am just grateful to God to have given me such beautiful babies,” she said.

As she prepared for her first Mother’s Day she said being new parents to sextuplets was going well. “So far so good. It’s been awesome” she said excitedly.

Speaking to an online blog, LagosMums, in July of 2020, Chiaka shared that their large family thrives off a schedule. She wrote:

“Stick to a schedule: One thing I learnt while our babies were in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was how important it is to establish schedules. They were already on a strict feeding schedule so I tried to follow suit when they came home. Try as much as possible to stick to a schedule because if you don’t, you will be constantly tending to babies and not getting enough rest. Also, find a schedule that works for you.”

Now that the sextuplets turned three in March of 2022, she has also shared how she finds balance as a mom.

“I try to focus on the job while at work while staying connected in case my attention is needed at home. When at home, I try to make up for the long hours spent at work so I make it count,” she shared. She also added that without sleep she can’t be well rested for her family.

“I try to get enough sleep – as much as I reasonably can – because it can have a huge effect on how one feels both emotionally and physically. I also listen to good music and love to watch movies.”

Continuing to be an inspiration with her one in a 4 billion lifestyle, Chiaka shares her and the sextuplet's life on her Instagram page. Followers are able to see posts beginning in 2020 of the picture-perfect family as well as follow along with their growth. Posting a third birthday tribute to her three sets of twins Chiaka wrote,

“3 hearty cheers for 3 amazing years! Thank you, everyone, for cheering us through,” followed by a video and pictures of their cakes and third birthday photoshoot.

While staying busy with raising six children, the family said having a solid support system is everything to their success.

“A good support system can never be over-emphasized. Whether you are a working mum or a stay-at-home mum, there are times you will need to rely on a support system to help you. For me, it’s my family and my loving friends,” she said.
