When someone is taken off of life support, it's common for family members to gather around that person to say their final goodbyes. A group of hospital workers at St. Luke's Meridian Medical Center shows their respect for patients as well in a special way.

As families wait for someone with an organ that matches the one that a loved one is waiting on, another family is saying goodbye to a loved one who has recently died. It's this act of kindness that often keeps the world going around.

The family who has lost a loved one who has become an organ donor can rejoice in that person's death, knowing that someone else will be able to breathe, live, or see because of one or multiple organs received.

The doctors and nurses at St. Luke's see the pain that families experience when someone dies, but they also see the difference that is made when someone receives an organ that the person has been waiting on for weeks, months, or possibly years.

The "Walk of Respect" is performed by several members of the hospital staff when someone passes away after organ donation. Doctors and nurses line the hallways of the hospital as the person's bed is pushed by the transplant team. They stand in silence, often in the hallway of the intensive care unit and close to the elevators that lead to the operating room.

If someone were to walk by the hallway, they wouldn't hear a sound as everyone is as quiet as possible. Many of the workers put their hands together and bow their heads in prayer. Family members have made comments about the actions of the medical workers, hailing them as the heroes and offering their views about organ donation and how it saves lives.
