Impromptu Piano Duet Leads To Beautiful Jazz Performance

No matter how old you are or what you do in life, one thing that is always able to transcend generational boundaries is music. Whether it's a type of music you are interested in or when you hear some music being played on the street by a busker, music is able to bring people together.

The power of music was in full effect in this video from 2015. In it, a man named Dotan Negrin was playing his piano on the streets of Paris. Negrin's story is a fascinating one — five years earlier he quit his 9-to-5 job in order to follow his musical passions. Hailing from New York, Negrin began playing in Union Square Park but soon decided to take his piano-playing around the world, in a bid to unite others through a shared love of music. Choosing to live out of his van, Negrin has traveled to over 500 cities and progressed in his musical journey.

That day in Paris, while Negrin was playing his piano, would turn out to be a special one, when a Danish composer, saxophonist and pianist named Frans Bak approached him. While Negrin is seated at the piano, Bak asks him, "Can I join you?" To which Negrin responds with an enthusiastic "yeah." Without skipping a beat, Bak begins playing the keys, accompanying Negrin's beat.

Although the two men didn't know each other before that moment, instantly, through their love of music, they were able to strike up a musical conversation as they spoke the language of jazz.

As the video goes on, the two men get more comfortable playing together and they even change their positions, with Negrin standing up while Bak sits down for a moment. Clearly, in sync, the two musicians are playing a delightful jazz melody, and at one point the camera moves to show a few bystanders looking on enjoying their performance.

The video clearly touched people around the world too, as it's now been viewed over 4.2 million times on Negrin's YouTube channel. In the description, Negrin adds a bit more context to the scenario, writing:

"This was completely Spontaneous! I was playing piano on the street when this man came up to me and ask to join me. Such a good time!"

And while Negrin didn't know he was playing with a professional film composer and musician, it seemed other people did. He added an edit to the description stating that he found out Bak's identity and also included a link to where anyone can listen to his music too. Meanwhile, Negrin has also released his own music including an album titled "Piano Around the World," which consists of 12 original tracks he composed himself.

This video shows the power of music and how it's a universal language that we all share. It also highlights that magical moments can happen at any time as long as we're open to them. If Negrin had said "no" to Bak that day, this special moment would never have happened, so it's a reminder to always keep an open mind.
