Growing up, many children have dreams of obtaining a job that can make a positive impact on the world. Finding opportunities to venture into particular career paths can help with that, such as becoming a doctor, nurse, firefighter, or police officer. What's important is that people pick something that matters to them and makes them happy and that they get all of the proper training and education required to make their dream job become a reality.

Unfortunately, not everyone makes the right choices in life. Although it's common for people to make mistakes every now and then, some mistakes can be damaging and are at times even irreparable. A 25-year-old man by the name of Valiery Portlock seemed to have a different approach to obtaining a job that proved to be a huge mistake on his end.

In August 2019, Portlock was caught attempting to impersonate a police officer. It seemed like he wanted all of the job's perks without any of the training and commitment. Portlock had installed lights on the top of his car and drove for a bit throughout Long Island, New York, before pulling over a van. Whatever Portlock had hoped to do by pretending to be a cop quickly came to a stop as he learned that the people inside the van he pulled over were actually real police detectives.

At that moment, Portlock tried to make a break for it, but the real cops knew how to properly handle the situation. Read on to find out more about this man's attempt at pretending to be a cop and the series of consequences that followed.

The Fake Police Officer

According to Hail News, Portlock was arrested in August 2019 after he tried to pull over a van while pretending to be a police officer. KCTV reported that Portlock sounded a horn and flashed emergency lights in an attempt to pull over an unmarked van in Long Island. It turned out that the van was filled with detectives from the Nassau County Police Department's electronics squad.

At that moment, Portlock realized that he needed to quickly change whatever plans he had. He immediately tried to flee the scene and ended up swerving his Nissan Sentra into oncoming traffic while speeding toward the Long Island Expressway. Highway patrol officers were able to find the 25-year-old man and pulled him over before arresting him, according to KCTV.

Neighbors explained that they had previously seen Portlock installing red and blue lights on the top of his car and seemed to be very preoccupied with his car, as per Hail News. Several of Portlock's neighbors wondered what he was up to, only to later find out that he had actually been trying to impersonate a police officer and got caught while doing so.

A neighbor named Mike Lisa commented, "I'm really happy that he did pull over that particular van." He had questioned if Portlock was a real cop, but found out that that wasn't the case. "Apparently he wasn't up to too much good," Lisa said.

KCTV reported that Portlock was brought into custody on charges including criminal impersonation and reckless endangerment. According to Raleigh Bail Bonds, a person convicted of this crime could face up to two years in prison and be fined up to $2,000.
