As Prince George turned another year older on July 22, 2024, the world watched with anticipation, celebrating not just his growth but the future of the British monarchy. In 2024, he reached a significant age, stepping further into the public eye and carrying the hopes of a nation.

Prince George’s 11th birthday was celebrated by the royal family, with the Prince and Princess of Wales posting a black-and-white picture of the prince smiling into the camera. The adorable picture was captioned:

“Wishing Prince George a very happy 11th birthday today!”

Fans and supporters of the royal family quickly flooded the comments with their birthday wishes. One user remarked on his growth, commenting:

“What a handsome boy he has become! Wishing prince George a very happy 11th birthday... may his 11th birthday be the greatest one so far❤️”

The birthday wishes for the young royal did not stop there, with another user writing:

“Can anyone just stop the time, please? He is such a handsome boy. ❤️ Time flies so fast! Thank you for sharing, Your Royal Highnesses. 😍 I hope Prince George has a very special day with the best company. Happy birthday, Prince George. We love you so much.”

Many complimented the Prince and Princess of Wales’ chosen picture of their son, some nostalgically pointing out his resemblance to the Spencers, his grandmother, Princess Diana’s family. Others also reflected on how fast he has grown, with one writing:

“This picture is so beautiful, he is growing up so fast! I wish the happiest birthday to Prince George. Have the best day! 🎂”

Prince George is currently second in line to the British throne, behind his father, Prince William.

Prince George’s 11th birthday came in the wake of the cancer diagnoses of his grandfather, King Charles III, and his mother, Catherine, the Princess of Wales. In March 2024, Catherine announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer in a heartfelt video, a month after the official page of the royal family announced Charles’s cancer diagnosis. The statement informed well-wishers:

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer,” it read.

Many questions surrounding the line of succession have risen, notably, what would happen if unfortunate circumstances left the young prince at the helm of the monarchy before he turned 18. Luckily, The Regency Act of 1937 was implemented for such cases. This act states that a regency would be appointed until the successor reached the required age. The regent will act as a substitute monarch, rule on behalf of the intended one and ensure a stable transition between rulers.

Prince George will be king upon the passing of his father, Prince William. However, if this happens before Prince George is of age, the regent will likely be his uncle, Prince Harry. Since Prince George’s younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, are next in line for the throne but are also minors, they would not be eligible to serve as regent.

This places Prince Harry as a potential candidate for the role, given that he is next in the line of succession after George and his siblings and meets the requirement of being over 18. He also possesses enough experience with royal duties to undertake the role.

Unsurprisingly, Prince George is already being prepared for his royal duties, balancing this with his childhood. According to Amaia Arrieta, designer to the young royals:

“I think George has known almost from the beginning. He has always had a more prominent role. There have been many events with his late great-grandmother or great-grandfather when it was just him, and his siblings weren’t there,” she shared.
