‘I Was Completely Inside’: Lobster Diver Swallowed By Humpback Whale By Mistake Lives To Tell Tale

Jun 23, 2021 by apost team

A trained commercial lobster diver from the state of Massachusetts found himself in an extremely scary and dangerous situation when he went diving in early June 2021. The diver, Michael Packard, was swallowed by the humpback whale and was stuck inside the mouth of the large animal for a few minutes before miraculously being spit back out into the ocean. Although Packard had a few injuries to recover from and was also required some much needed time to collect himself, he managed to escape the situation and live to tell the tale.

Packard, from Provincetown, Massachusetts, was diving for lobsters in Cape Cod when the terrifying situation occurred. His job requires plenty of skill and bravery, as there are risks that come with it. As a licensed commercial lobster diver, it’s his job to pluck lobsters off the sandy shelf of the ocean’s bottom. Some of the dangerous factors they need to be aware of are hazardous animals and conditions, such as rough currents and bad weather. Although Packard has found himself in other scary situations before, none were as close of a call as this one.

What started out like any typical diving day quickly turned into a day full of fear and panic, but ended with gratitude. The seasoned lobster diver was lucky enough to make it out alive after being swallowed by a humpback whale. Not only that, but he managed to escape without too many serious injuries, and is hopeful about his recovery and getting back to work as soon as possible.

Details About The Scary Situation

During an interview with Global National, Packard opened up about the scary experience. “This is how you’re going to go, Michael, this is how you’re going to die,” he said, revealing the thoughts he had while inside the mouth of the humpback whale. Packard told Global National that while he was out diving, he all of a sudden felt a bump and then everything went dark. He quickly realized that he was inside the whale’s mouth.

At first, he thought he was swallowed by a great white shark, but once he realized that there were no teeth, he discovered that he was inside of a whale’s mouth. “I could sense I was moving, and I could feel the whale squeezing with the muscles in his mouth,” Packard told the Cape Cod Times. “I was completely inside; it was completely black.”

Packard said that all he could think about were his two sons back home, aged 12 and 15. Lucky for him, the whale was not too fond of the diver outfitted with scuba gear, and the large creature began shaking its head before finally spitting him out a few minutes later.

“I saw light, and he started throwing his head side to side, and the next thing I knew I was outside (in the water),” Packard said. He was later sent to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis following the incident and was released later in the afternoon with soft tissue damage, but no broken bones, according to the Cape Cod Times. He told the news outlet that he was planning on returning to diving as soon as he was healed.
