I Gave Up On Our Love, Not Because I Didn't Care, But Because YOU Never Did

I am not a quitter and this is a fact you know very well. You know this from the many nights I spent at your side, working hard on the problems in your life, while the challenges in my own life went unattended. I know you remember the many days I concentrated on the issues in your life while paying no mind to my own.

The fact that I gave you everything in our relationship until there was nothing else to give is evidence enough that I am not a quitter. When I make a choice, I see it through until the very end. I am also a woman of my word. However, I refuse to be the only one putting effort into the relationship. It takes two people to build and maintain a good and loving relationship and I refuse to shoulder that burden alone.
It is not factual to say I gave up on us because there has not been an us for quite some time. Perhaps there was a time, in the beginning, when you cared about being true to your word. I do remember the charm and kindness you once displayed. There was a moment in time when I could ask for no more than you gave to me as a partner. But that time is long gone.

I deserve more than a relationship in which I am the only contributor. I deserve someone to hold me close and tell me that everything will be okay even when this is not the reality. I should feel loved and be secure in the knowledge my partner is as committed to the relationship as I am. I do not expect you to give up your life in an effort to make me happy. Your goals and dreams do not have to be sacrificed to facilitate my own. I only require someone who loves me the same as I love them. I need someone who is by my side because it is what he desires and not because it is what he is supposed to do.
We both know you were not that person. There is nothing left for me to give to the relationship. And this is the reason I gave up. It is painful to look in the mirror and see the hollowness in my eyes that use to be love. There was once a fire in my eyes when I looked into the mirror. It was you that set that fire. It was also you that put the fire out.

It is just as painful for me to end the situation. But I guess this is the way it should be since I am the one that kept it going for longer than I should have.
It is not that I do not care and this is something else you know very well. You know that for you I would jump into an ocean even if I wasn't able to swim. I would face any of my fears for you. The problem is you do nothing while I fight the obstacles before us. The problem is not that I do not care. The problem is you don't. My emotional state does not matter to you if you get all the things you want from the situation. Your peace is worth much more to you than my sanity. When did this happen to us? When did you become this person?

I can remember the man I fell in love with. The man I would have done anything for is no longer present. I often wonder how something so special can turn into something like this. How could the man who once showed me so much love and attention transform into an emotionless jerk with affection only for himself?
I didn't choose to give up on you. I chose not to give up on me. My priority is now myself and it should have been this way for a very long time.
