Husband's Friend Won't Call Son By His Name So He's Banned From The House

Having a child comes with a lot of responsibilities, but it also comes with plenty of exciting moments. One of the most exciting parts about having a child is picking out a name for them. Some people choose traditional names, while others pick names that have a special meaning to them. Although some people may not like the names that parents give their child, parents have a right to stand their ground and tell people to respect their choices and their child’s name.

A 27-year-old woman is married to a 29-year-old man, and the two have a son together named after the woman’s grandfather. It meant a lot to her and to her side of the family to pick the name. Unfortunately, not everyone is as accepting of the name choice. Her husband has a friend from college, and they are extremely close to the point that they’re nearly inseparable. However, his friend’s behavior is typically not the best as he is occasionally very rude toward other people.

This man’s behavior didn’t seem to subside when it came time to call the married couple’s son by his real name. The friend refused and kept calling the child a different name. Everything came to a head one night in September 2021 when the wife finally called out her husband’s friend. Everything turned sour, and now her husband and his friend are barely speaking, leaving the wife to wonder if she handled the situation wrong. She took to Reddit on Sept. 28, 2021, seeking advice on what to do next.

Disrespecting Her Son’s Name

Starting off her Reddit post, the original poster (OP) talked about how her husband’s best friend was like a brother to him, but she didn’t care for his mannerisms. He was often stubborn and rude toward others, and the OP also wasn’t a fan of his sense of humor. “I tolerate his behavior since it’s not that weird, but things got worse when I got pregnant,” the OP said. “He started calling my unborn son ‘Thomas’ even though we told him I picked my grandfather’s name for my son.”

Her husband’s friend refused to let up and continued to call her son Thomas or Tommy after she gave birth. He would even upload pictures of the child to his social media using this nickname, confusing the OP’s family in the process. “I talked to my husband and then explained to his friend that he should stop calling my son Thomas but he kept doing it even more,” the OP said. “He even came up with more nicknames besides the name itself.”

Everything came to a head one night when the OP’s husband’s friend visited them while her family was also visiting. He continued to call her son Thomas, leaving everyone else confused. “I angrily corrected him in front of everyone and told him my son’s name is not Thomas,” the OP explained. “In his defense he said that Thomas was a lot cooler and better than the name I picked.” Overhearing the conversation, the OP’s family was extremely hurt since her child had been named after her grandfather. It held an important meaning to them, but it seemed like the husband’s friend just didn’t care.

Finally Taking A Stand

The OP was livid at this point and decided to take a stand against her husband’s best friend.

“I got mad and told him he’s no longer welcome to our house until he learns to call my son with his real name and stop this disrespect,” she said.

She and her husband’s friend argued until he eventually left, leaving an awkward feeling in the room. Since then, OP’s husband and his friend haven’t spoken to each other, making OP feel like she was ruining their 10 years of friendship.

Her husband continued to defend his friend, though, telling his wife that it wasn’t fair she berated him in front of her family and that he has a right to have his own opinion, even if that opinion is that their son’s name is “stupid.” In the comments, the OP clarified that she doesn’t want her son to be confused about his name, but her husband still didn’t think it was a big deal that his friend called him Thomas.

Reddit users weren’t happy with the OP’s husband and his friend and gave the OP some advice on how to handle the situation. One user commented, “This is a really odd thing for the friend to be doing, and really disrespectful. Does he realize this isn’t his baby?”

Another user said, “Time to correct your husband: The friend ruined the friendship with his blatant disrespect for you and your son in front of your family.” The commenter went on to say that the OP’s husband needs to respect her and that he should have stood up for her and their son.
