On the morning of January 26, 2020, the 18-time All-Star and five-time N.B.A. champion, Kobe Bryant, passed away in a devastating helicopter crash. Tragically, the basketball legend’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, was also among the nine people on board and lost her life. Matt Mauser's wife was among the victims on board the helicopter crash. He spoke about how his wife was 'extraordinary' and how he doesn't know how to parent their three small children as a widow.

Mauser spoke on the Today show about his wife's tragic death saying, “It's horrible. I've got three small kids, and I’m trying to figure out how to navigate life with three kids and no mom." Mauser spoke about how his family came to be friends with the Bryants. He had met Kobe while on a school field trip for Kobe's daughter Gianna.

Kobe then met Mauser's wife, Christina, who was an assistant basketball coach at the school. The NBA legend was so impressed by Christina's "amazing mind" when it came to basketball that he hired her to teach defense at his Mamba Sports Academy.

"[Kobe] didn't choose Christina for just any ordinary reason — she was extraordinary," Mauser said. "She was incredibly witty, funny like nobody you've ever met."

"She was warm, she was incredibly bright. She was technologically incredibly savvy, she could figure out anything," he added. "[Kobe] picked her because she was amazing. I was so proud of her and she was so happy."

Christina along with the 8 other people on board was on their way to one of Gigi's basketball games when the helicopter accident occurred.

Mauser said that it was touching to see how much everybody mourned his wife's loss on the media coverage. His daughter gave a statement about Christina. "Everything was about how much everybody was mourning and hurting, and she said it was nice to know everybody was hurting along with us," the grieving husband said. "And I know that sounds odd but it did kind of help."

Our deepest condolences go out to the Bryant family and all the other families afflicted by this accident. Make sure you pass this along to your friends and family.
