Husband Gives Life-Saving Gift To Wife By Donating His Kidney To Her On Christmas Eve

A newly-wed couple from Detroit had a rather special Christmas as the two underwent surgery together. The kidney transplant took place at Henry Ford Hospital on Christmas Eve.

Logan and Vanessa Bosselaar's adventure began a few months ago when Logan decided to donate his own kidney to help his wife's health condition. The tests came back positive, confirming Logan as a viable transplant match. The green light was given for the operation.

The couple hailing from Michigan spent their holiday season in a very peculiar way. They never would have expected things to take this turn around Christmas. 

Understandably, the newlywed couple described their Christmas as "very different." Earlier this week, the couple chatted with News 8 from the hospital via video call. Logan explained that he got to see his wife after the surgery. Although she wasn't lucid, Logan was relieved to see his partner doing fine.

When she was only 24-years-old, doctor's told Vanessa that a kidney transplant was the best choice for avoiding dialysis given her stage 5 kidney disease. Logan told News 8 that the couple was prepped in the same room. They took him first to prepare the kidney. He also said that Vanessa was supposed to feel "like a million bucks" after the surgery. Vanessa and Logan both explained how most people are surprised about the situation. To the couple, it was "meant to be."

Several members of the medical staff involved in the surgery have revealed their surprise at the outcome of the situation. It's rare for a wife and a husband to be a perfect match for organ transplants. Although couples are willing to help their loved ones by donating an organ, there has to be a match for the surgery to be a success. Vanessa revealed that her doctors had seen only one or two cases like theirs in the past.

What's even more surprising is that the couple was just involved in a rough car accident two weeks ago. The couple was on the way home when the got into an accident and the car rolled over. Fortunately, Vanessa and Logan emerged from the accident with only small injuries.

Logan called the past few weeks amazing. Walking away from a bad accident and then undergoing a successful organ transplant is incredibly fortunate. The couple talked about how their relationship was never stronger than it is now. They're ready to come back home to see their dogs.
