Around seven years ago, the Weight family from Elk Ridge, Utah adopted their first son, Milo, after spending weeks in the local adoption system. After a special request from the child’s mother, the Weights adopted Milo’s biological sister, Onni, five years after that first adoption.

According to Good Morning America (GMA), Joseph and Shanna Weight first learned that Milo’s birth mother was pregnant again after she reached out to them through the adoption service they had used, Act of Love Adoptions, requesting that the family also adopt her then-unborn child. After deliberating amongst each other, the Weights, who now have a biological child of their own, agreed, and so as of last year, Milo, who is now six, and his baby sister, who recently turned one, live under the same roof along with their brother, Nash.

According to GMA, Milo’s birth mom, who was only 18 years old when she had him, put him up for adoption because she wanted her children to have a better life. "She was a young mom and she had grown up with a lot of siblings from a lot of different fathers," Joseph Weight told GMA. "She never knew her dad so she wanted her child to have something better than what she had."

Luckily, nine years after the the Weight’s had first married, they decided that they wanted to become parents through adoption — around the same time Milo was born. Since then, the Weights say that they are “very grateful” that Milo and Onni’s biological mother chose them twice to adopt her kids.

"Milo, he was kind of the perfect first child," Shanna Weight told GMA when asked to describe her children. "He was our entire world. I can't explain what he's done for our lives. Nash's exuberance and fun keeps on our toes. Onni has a sweet calmness to her. She's just pleasant and happy, but particular. She makes sure you get it right."

However, when the adoption agency first called the Weight family after Onni’s birth, they weren’t immediately ready to go through with the adoption. Shanna was traveling and out of the country, so the adoption agency was only in contact with her husband. Not to mention that adopting a child is always a life-changing decision.

"My first thought was, 'There's no way we can do this. We're not ready,'" Shanna Weight told GMA. "After the initial shock wore off I thought, 'It would be so nice to have them raised together.'"

Despite his parents’ initial reluctance, however, Milo seemed ready to take Onni in the moment the couple told their son. In fact, when Shanna Weight told Milo that his birth mother was pregnant, he started jumping up and down. Weight told GMA that he then added, “We're bringing home that baby.” And Milo was right. Two days after Onni’s birth, the Weights brought her home to her brother, Milo, who was overjoyed to welcome his sister to her new family.

"She has a dimple just like Milo," Joseph Weight told GMA. "He loves to talk to her and make her smile. She's a smiler."
