Hugh Jackman Recalls ‘Humiliating’ Moment With Sandra Bullock During ‘Miss Congeniality’ Auditions

Hugh Jackman is one of the biggest actors in the world. From his iconic portrayal of a temperamental adamantium-wielding mutant in the “X-Men” film franchise to a struggling circus owner in “The Greatest Showman,” Jackman’s profile as an actor is as wide as it can be.

The star has gone on to have a successful career both commercially and critically. He is an Academy Award away from achieving the coveted EGOT status; the title is given to people who have won all four major American entertainment awards — Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards. Jackman already has his hands on a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award and two Tony Awards. He got his start working in theater and on television in Australia before he crossed over into the film industry in Hollywood.

The actor has played the lead role in such films as "Kate & Leopold," "X2," “X-Men: The Last Stand,” "The Prestige" and "Logan." Jackman also starred as Jean Valjean in the epic musical film "Les Misérables," for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Jackman is now considered one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood because of his range, acting prowess and intrinsic power to command a scene whenever he is in it. But like many other actors, he also had humble beginnings — a time when he was still a nobody and even auditions where he was on the losing side of the chorus line.

In a profile interview with Variety, Jackman recalled a particular moment during his beginning as an actor when he missed out on a chance to work in the now-iconic film, “Miss Congeniality,” because of an audition blunder. Read on to learn more about what happened to Jackman during the auditions.

Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Jackman is one of the biggest Australian actors in the world. He started in the entertainment industry as a theater actor, performing onstage on small productions of “The Season at Sarsaparilla,” “Sunset Boulevard” and “Beauty and the Beast,” as Gaston, in Australia.

Afterward, he snagged the lead of Curly McLaine in “Oklahoma!” at the West End Production of the show. He also starred in the television film of the same musical that featured one of their performances at the Royal National Theatre.

Theater holds a special place in Jackman’s career, but it did not hold him back from pursuing Hollywood. When he bagged the role of Wolverine in “X-Men,” it catapulted him to greater heights as it opened doors of opportunities to the relatively unknown actor.

As early as 2003, he became more prominent in theater and in Hollywood. Jackman was recruited as the host of the Tony Awards for three consecutive years, starting from 2003 until 2005.

He also donned the gothic trenchcoat of Gabriel Van Helsing in the movie “Van Helsing.” He then voiced the same role in the sequel “Van Helsing: The London Assignment,” both released in 2004.

While many of the films that Jackman has landed in have been either fantasy, thriller or animated, he hasn't been short of leading man roles either. In 2006, he starred alongside Scarlett Johansson in the romantic crime comedy film “Scoop.” “Kate & Leopold” and “Australia” were also some of his greatest works.

But before landing those projects, Jackman had to work tirelessly to get there. In his recollection to Variety, he recounted how he had to land a gig on Sandra Bullock’s “Miss Congeniality” for his talent manager to score him a role in Ashley Judd’s “Someone Like You” in 2001.

In the entertainment industry, many consider talent managers as important as an actor’s acting chops. During his career beginnings, Jackman’s talent manager at the time wanted him to land a role in the then-upcoming romantic comedy film “Someone Like You.” But before that, his manager had to make sure that he would first bag the role of Bullock’s love interest in “Miss Congeniality.”

“No one knew ‘X-Men’ yet. I was a nobody,” Jackman recalled in the profile interview with Variety.

Jackman revealed that he didn’t want the role, but because his agent wanted him to do it so that he could negotiate his way up to get “Someone Like You,” he still auditioned. But what he did not expect at the time was how showing up in the auditions and doing a screen test with Bullock might have been one of the greatest missed opportunities he would have had in his career.

He recalled that when he was running lines with Bullock, he was surprised by how good she was: “‘Holy sh*t! She’s amazing! And so quick and fast. I’m not even vaguely up to speed here.’ I was pedaling as fast as I could, but I didn’t know the script well enough.”

Unfortunately, Jackman did not score the role as it was given to Emmy-nominated actor and producer Benjamin Bratt, who was well-loved for his on-screen chemistry with Bullock at the time.

For Jackman, it was both a learning experience for him and a funny moment that he happily recounts every now and then.

“That’s humiliating when your agent says, ‘I don’t want you to get this job, but just go get it.’ And then you don’t get it,” he shared.
