59-year-old Hugh, proved he can still cause quite a stir when he made the "Bridget Jones's Diary" reference just before he announced the Best Film nominations. He had just finished congratulating his former co-star Renée Zellweger, 50, who came up on stage to collect the award for best actress for her role in "Judy."

The annual event is screened live on the BBC, and was hosted by Graham Norton. According to the Metro, Hugh's first joke was: "First of all, well done, Jones." This went down very well with the audience as they errupted in laughter in recognition of the infamous line from the movie's heart-throb, Daniel Cleaver, who played Bridget's boss. He then added another iconic line, "That was a very, very silly little dress, I thought."

Hugh set a trend as this wasn't the only Bridget Jones gag he made during the speech. Seeing that the audience was really enjoying his references to Bridget Jones, he also joked about Colin Firth, who played Mark Darcy, his love rival in the 2001 hit romcom. He said: "Best Film category is an amazing bunch of films... I voted – I don't normally do that unless I'm specifically trying to prevent Colin Firth from winning," reports the Daily Mail.
