How You Can Help Out During ‘Adopt A Shelter Dog’ Month If Adoption Isn’t An Option

Nov 05, 2019 by apost team

Since October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, now is the perfect time to get a lovable pup for your home. If you're able to adopt one of these dogs, you should go right away to your local shelter and start the process.

If you're unable to take in a dog of your own, there are other ways for you to help the cause.

1. Volunteer

If you can't take a dog into your home, you could always donate some of your time to work at a local pet shelter. There is always a lot of work to be done at these facilities, and your pair of extra hands will be very much appreciated. Call a shelter, and see if they need help.

2.  Foster a dog short-term.

If you can't take on a permanent new member of your family, maybe you could take care of a dog for a short time. By agreeing to take care of a dog for only a few weeks, it frees up space for other dogs who are out on the streets, and it also helps the process of finding the pup a permanent home.

3. Socially-responsible brands

If you purchase from companies that donate some of their profits to help animals, you will be indirectly helping shelter dogs receive a place to live. Some local companies make a big impact on the cause, so your patronage will go a long way.

4. Donate

Every little bit of money and food counts. If you can't adopt or foster a dog, your contributions will help a lot, even if it's only $5 a week.

5. Social media

When we all get together on social media to raise awareness about animals in need, it makes a big difference. Even if you're not famous, your messages will be seen and heard by many people and make an impact.

6. Word of mouth is powerful

If your friends mention their interest in dogs, let them know that it's Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and encourage them to get a puppy of their own. If they say they're only interested in a particular breed or a newborn puppy, let them know that there are rescue organizations that can help them get the exact dog that they want.

7. Promote mutts

Some people may not understand that some of the best pets are mutts. Purebred dogs have a certain appeal, but mutts have a unique charm. Finding an interesting mix can be rewarding, and it helps out dogs who might otherwise be overlooked.
