How To Avoid Overparenting And Still Raise Successful Children
Jan 07, 2019 by apost team
It can be pretty difficult to raise kids in today's generation. If you're always there watching over them, you become this over obsessed helicopter parent; ignore them for a little bit, and then suddenly you're an absent parent. It's all about finding that perfect middle ground that creates a happy family relationship that works on raising the kids in the right way.
Let's dive right in to see five unique things you need to keep in mind when being there for your child. Just a few changes to how you treat them can make all the difference.
1. Don't Focus On Just Making Them Happy
Raise your kids to do more than just live happily. Usually, our main concern as a parent is to make kids happy, but a much better goal would be to focus on making your kids moral and productive. The goal is to hope that happiness comes to them simply because of the virtue of the good they have done, alongside the love they feel from the parents. Teaching your kids about doing what's right leads to developing well-mannered character traits.

2. Lead Them To Be Helpful
Educate your kids to be helpful around the house. Oftentimes, kids grow up thinking they do chores in exchange for a bigger allowance, but they can't keep this mentality as they enter adulthood and going into college. You want them to learn how to pitch in without expecting anything in return. This gives them the mentality they bring into adulthood and think, "How can I help out my boss today? How can I help clean out this whole dorm room?"
3. Allow Them To Control Their Lives
Being a good parent means letting them learn on their own. Give them advice and provide guidance when needed, but give them the space they deserve to learn about independence. Research shows that kids who plan their week or evaluate their own lives at school develop the right mindset to take control of their lives. Introduce to your kids to be organized and lead the way, and then let them do it on their own.
Some parents are concerned about telling kids where to spend their allowance to avoid seeing them fail or make mistakes. It's better for them to make the mistake now with a tiny allowance than to fail later on with their six-figure salaries.
4. The Small Things Matter
It's amazing how the smallest gestures from parents can create good outcomes. Simply being there for your kid, responding kindly to their questions, or even teaching them numbers and letters can all be small gestures they don't forget. Be there for your child when they need you, but don't overrule their rules when they want privacy.
5. Let Them Know You Value Who They Are
Nothing is worse than seeing children grow in fear of their parents because of their bad grade or not doing well on a test. Children aren't able to love themselves and others if they aren't first shown what love is. When they arrive home, make sure you spend even just a spare moment with them to show the joy on your face that they are home.
Feel free to ask them about their day and what went well. Show them that they are more than just their GPA. Be there to encourage them to do their best, but ensure them that their value is based on who they are not and not on their results.
