How One Surgeon’s Decision To Write His Name On His Cap Is Saving Lives Around The Globe

Dr. Rob Hackett is being credited with an ingenious idea that has revolutionized the way that people in the medical profession remember names and occupations, The Daily Mail reports.

The anesthetist had noticed that some of the most common mistakes in the operating room were happening when doctors struggled to remember details during the stress of certain life or death situations.

Although it may be easy to remember the names of colleagues during normal situations, the intensity of the operating room often causes surgeons to blank on names. Momentarily not being able to address a colleague and ask for assistance can mean a matter of life and death in the operating room.

This when Dr. Hackett came up with his idea to put his name and title on his surgical cap. While it sounds like such a simple concept, the idea quickly gained traction in medical circles. Although Dr. Hackett was initially ridiculed for the idea of putting his name on the front of his cap, surgeons eventually realized that the information presented front and center was incredibly helpful.

It did not take long for all of Dr. Hackett's colleagues to begin doing the same with their caps. As a result of the commitment to this idea, the hospital's success rates in the operating room improved greatly. Once Dr. Hackett posted this data, hospitals from around the world began implementing the idea as well.

Dr. Hackett and his co-workers then turned to social media to get the word out even more. #TheatreCapChallenge was born, encouraging medical professionals to adopt the same practice while in the operating room.

Not only has this initiative undoubtedly saved lives, but it has also been a benefit for the environment while delivering significant cost savings for hospitals. Because these personalized caps are not disposable, hospitals are not using as many disposable caps. Dr. Hackett's idea has proved that sometimes it is the little things that can make a huge difference.
