How you meet your husband or wife can vary from person to person. While most people imagine a romantic first meeting at a fancy ball, people often meet their spouse in the most unlikely ways.

Such is the story of actor Jeff Bridges and his wife, Susan Geston. While Hollywood stars are known to change spouses as frequently as they change clothes, Bridges and Geston have been together for an incredible four decades.

In an interview with the Oprah Winfrey Network, Bridges, who is best known for his role as the Dude in the 1998 comedy film The Big Lebowski, tells of his first meeting with Geston in 1975. Back then, Bridges was already an established actor and was filming a new movie, Rancho Deluxe, in Montana's Paradise Valley. Bridges first spied Geston when he and the rest of the cast were filming in a hot tub at Chico Hot Springs near Livingston. As he was filming his scenes, Bridges became enamored of Geston, saying that it was love at first sight.

Between takes, Bridges watched Geston, using a magazine to conceal himself from her. Uncertain if she was a guest of the hotel, a waitress, or some other person, Bridges found Geston to be very beautiful. Bridges also noticed that Geston sported two black eyes and a broken nose, which he later found out was caused by an accident.

Looking past Geston’s imperfections and seeing her true beauty, Bridges worked up the nerve to ask her out. As it turned out, Geston was waiting tables to pay for her college tuition. Approaching the waitress, Bridges asked her if she would like to go out on a date with him. Geston turned him down, but said that as Livingston is a small town, its likely that they would run into each other eventually.

A few nights later, Bridges and Geston met at a bar. Dancing the night away, the two fell in love instantly. After a while, the two became very devoted to one another and Geston told Bridges that she wanted to get married and have children. Bridges, on the other hand, was not interested in family life. When Geston gave him an ultimatum, Bridges relented rather than risk losing the love of his life. Bridges and Geston were married on June 5, 1975, the wedding ceremony having taken place a mere five days after Bridges proposed to Geston.

Ten years later, Bridges received a letter from a makeup artist who had worked on Rancho Deluxe. The makeup artist explained that he had taken two pictures of Bridges’s first meeting with Geston and included it with the letter. Bridges now carries these photos with him everywhere in his wallet and calls them his most prize possessions.

Despite the passage of time, Bridges says that he and Geston are still very much in love and that their relationship gets better every day. The two are also the proud parents of three daughters: Isabelle, Jessica, and Haley.

At the end of the day, the relationship between Bridges and Geston is proof positive that you can find your true love in the most unlikely places imaginable. While Bridges and Geston came from two very different worlds, he a famous Hollywood actor and she a college student and waitress, their love blossomed because they cared for one another and couldn’t stand the idea of being apart.
