It's so easy to blame our periods for emotional days and mood swings, but would you actually believe us if we told you that some products you may be using might actually be the cause of your emotional uncertainty?

Sara Gottfried, MD, author of the New York Times best-selling book The Hormone Reset Diet thinks so. In fact, she thinks knowing this is so important that many people are doing incredible harm to their body without even understanding exactly what's going on!

It turns out, there are 11 things you can change about your diet that may affect your hormones:

1. Eating Too Much Sugar

If you frequently eat too much sugar, you may open yourself to insulin resistance, which can lead to weight gain and sugar addiction.

2. Bad Nights Of Sleep

If you have a bad night of sleep, this can also affect your hormones, causing an increase in ghrelin (your hunger hormone) and a decrease in leptin (your satiety hormone), ultimately affecting your overall performance.

3. Nail Polish

Though it's not well-known, nail polish actually can contain a chemical called tiphenyl phosphate, which can lead to a disruption in your hormones and in some cases causing reproductive problems and weight gain.

4. Lack Of Socializing

Not socializing frequently enough is known to raise your stress levels which can also set your hormones out-of-balance.

5. Too Much Exercise

Daily exercise is generally good, but, if you overdo it, it can be just as harmful as it is helpful by throwing your cortisol levels awry, causing hormonal trouble.

6. Not Enough Exercise

On the other side of the coin is not getting enough exercise, something that can not only hurt your hormonal levels, but also possibly your thyroid.

7. Frequent Hand-Washing

For those who wash their hands a little too much, you might want to lay off for a bit, as it can also affect your hormone imbalance.

8. Your Couch

This may seem like an unlikely cause, but it's true—some couches contain fire retardant, which in turn has unhealthy chemicals that affect hormones.

9. Your Computer

Using computers late at night can lower melatonin and hurt your sleep cycle, ensuring that you have a bad night's sleep. Try to keep your phone out of your bedroom, while you're at it, as it can have a similar effect on your hormone levels.

10. Your Shampoo

Some shampoos can actually be toxic and ultimately harmful to hormone balances if you're not careful. Stick to natural ingredients and washing your hair every other day, if possible, to mitigate these effects.

11. Makeup And Skin Products

Be on the lookout for synthetic chemicals in the products you use, as they can greatly affect your hormones as well.
