Honors Student Suspended For Using $20 Bill In School

These days, almost any product you can imagine is being counterfeited, from clothing to electronic gadgets. One of the most counterfeited things that people know of is money. Adults sometimes have a hard time distinguishing genuine items from counterfeit, so children are even less likely to be able to spot a fake bill.

An honor student's family is currently protesting the suspension of their son because of an incident where he tried to use a counterfeit $20 bill.

The boy in question is Christian Philon, a student at the Austin Road Middle School in Stockbridge, Georgia.

The 12-year-old was penalized with a 10-day suspension for trying to buy his lunch with a counterfeit bill.

Christian asserts that he had no idea that he was in possession of a counterfeit bill, and his parents attest to this fact as well. Even though the parents brought the matter to the police, the school refused to redact the punishment.

The bill came to Christian from his father Earvin who is a retired veteran. Mr. Philon came into possession of the bill when he received change after purchasing food from a restaurant. He claims that he had no prior experience with counterfeit money, so he was unable to differentiate it from genuine currency.

Mr. Philon filed a police report hoping that this would prove his son's innocence in the matter. The boy's mother told the television news station that the boy would not have been given a counterfeit bill if either of them knew that the bill was not genuine.

Christian described the incident that involved the bill.

He said that he was shocked when the staff in the lunchroom discovered that his $20 bill was fake by using a marker that changes color in the presence of counterfeit paper.

The child's parents are appealing on the grounds that this offense will put a blemish on their son's otherwise perfect record. The boy is a straight-A student, and he is involved in athletics.

The Philon family is baffled about why the school would insist on punishing the boy who obviously was unaware of the bill being fake.

The school superintendent has stated that the boy should not have been punished. After a review by the school board, the boy has been allowed to return to class.
