Homeowner’s ‘Faith In Humanity’ Is Restored After He Notices 3 Kids With $700 On Security Footage

The kindness that humanity has to offer never ceases to amaze people, especially when they least expect it. We may not always anticipate strangers to go out of their way to do something polite or helpful for us, which is even more reason why acts of kindness are so appreciated and can go such a long way.

For many people, a simple act of kindness can be just holding the door open for the person who is walking behind them. Or, it may be picking up the pen from a classmate who accidentally dropped it on the floor. These may seem mundane, but the thought and effort can truly make someone’s day!

This was exactly the case for one man when he noticed something unusual on his security camera footage one day after he came home. It was a hot day in July 2018 when Colorado homeowner Jamie Carlton checked his surveillance footage as soon as he arrived home. The homeowner looked in amazement at the scene that unfolded on his doorstep in the earlier hours that day.

While watching the surveillance video, Carlton could see three children ride up on their bikes to his home and approach his doorstep. Because no one was home, an automatic voice on his security system began speaking to them. It said: “Hi, we’re unable to answer the door at this time, but there’s a camera recording. So, please leave us a message. Thank you for stopping by.”

It appeared as though the children were placing something on his stoop, and then they began addressing the camera. They said that they had found the man’s wallet – which was filled with $700 – outside of his vehicle and wanted to return it to him. 

According to 9News, siblings Haylie Wenke, 13, and Reagan Wenke, 6, along with their friend, performed a wonderfully kind deed back in July 2018 when they returned a wallet full of money to its rightful owner. There was $700 stuffed inside the wallet. The money belonged to Carlton’s son, Nigel Drake, who had dropped his wallet out of his pocket when returning home from work.

On the surveillance footage, the kids said:

“We found your wallet outside of your car and we just thought we would give it back to you. I’m going to put it over here so no one takes any money. You’re welcome. Thank you.”

The three kids then jumped back onto their bikes and disappeared down the street. Carlton and Drake were incredibly moved by the kindness of the children. “I watched the video, and it was just these nice kids that just decided to do the nice thing,” Drake said. “It was very heartening to feel.”

However, the father and son had no idea who they were, where they lived, or how to find them. So, in an effort to locate and thank them, Carlton posted the security footage on his Facebook page in hopes of someone helping to identify the three children. It wasn’t long before the video clip went viral, and the kids received the recognition they deserved.

“It wasn’t our money, and we didn’t really need it, so we just gave it back,” Haylie told 9News. The children’s kind-hearted gesture definitely resonated with plenty of people, especially Drake. He said:

“It gives you faith in humanity a little bit that there are good kids out there. These kids’ parents are raising them the right way.”
