An organization in Austin is hoping to tackle two of the city’s biggest problems by giving the homeless an opportunity to clean up the city streets for $15 an hour.

The Other Ones Foundation wants to transition “Austin's homeless neighbors into an engaged community through shelter, opportunity, and support” according to their website. To do so they have several programs in place including the “Workforce First” program, that gives the homeless an opportunity to generate income that they might not have had before.

According to Megaphone, the innovative program offers those who are homeless and would be panhandling a chance to “engage in the work of large-scale environmental cleanup, subsidized housing improvements, public art maintenance, and sheltered animal enrichment.” In return for their work, they receive $15 an hour, transport to the job, as well as lunch.

The organization also provides other important services for the homeless, and have a physical shelter called “The Golden Road.” It’s an organization that has a high success rate, they boast that they were able to pay out $100,00 in earned income to those who participated in their programs, and given two dozen individuals transition help into stable housing. This is all in just under one year.
