What does it mean to be a hero? Do you have to be naturally predisposed to good deeds, or does it mean being aware of any opportunities you have to help others and following through on them? Whatever your view is, it would be hard to argue that this homeless man is anything but a hero.

For almost five years, Darin Barton has been homeless. He has a panhandling spot near an interstate in Denver. Barton has come to accept that plenty of passing motorists viewed him unfavorably.

But that hasn't stopped him from spreading kindness. His sign reads "Have a blessed day." It turns out that Darin understands how he can be instrumental in bringing blessings to others.

It was a typical day for Darin, panhandling at his usual spot. Then, he heard a sound like nothing else. A trailer had collided with an assortment of vehicles. The carnage of the fiery wreck was immediately apparent. Already, some lives had been lost. Darin knew that he couldn't just be a bystander.

He tossed his sign aside and went towards the wreck. Pulling people out along with the help of others, Darin showed true courage and absolute selflessness.

He knew right then that he had a mission. He put his life on the line so that others would be okay. It didn't matter that they were strangers, because Darin's heart is one that's opened for everyone.

This act of bravery teaches us that we are all humans. It doesn't matter whether we have a permanent place to call home or whether we have even a dime to our names. Someone being homeless doesn't mean that they don't have morals.

If anything, Darin has likely developed an even greater sense of empathy in his time on the streets, since he's realized just how much of a difference some kindness can make in a person's life. People all over have been touched by Darin's story, and we hope that he is able to find himself in a stable living environment soon.

As Darin proves, you can be in a tough situation, but that doesn't mean that you've lost your sense of compassion. We hope that he is able to inspire others to do the right thing. Show this to anyone you know who is fond of stories about people helping others.
