You won't believe how rough this dog looked when it was rescued two-and-a-half years ago. These volunteers worked a miracle on Benji!

Dogs have been known as "man's best friend" for a long, long time. They are considered to be the best mammalian companion that humans can have. Dogs genuinely enjoy spending time with humans. They have reliably been used as forms of protection and attack in conflicts. Our furry, four-footed friends can also help find and hunt prey.

Thanks to the millennia-old efforts of our ancestors to domesticate dogs, we're able to keep friendly, cuddly, adorable pets in our homes today.

Unfortunately, some dogs aren't cared for as well as they should be taken care of. As a matter of fact, millions of homeless dogs are roaming the planet at any given time.

Now named Benji, a healthy, friendly, gracious animal that is well-taken care of, a scraggly mess of a dog was found on the streets of Houston a little more than two years ago.

It's estimated that there are about 1.25 million dogs stranded across the city of Houston, Texas, which only boasts a human population of 2.2 million in comparison. Luckily, a group of volunteers who were tasked with rescuing homeless, ownerless dogs across the city of Houston came across Benji.

Those volunteers ran across the scraggly mess of a dog on Halloween. In honor of the popular Halloween-time movie Benji, the small dog was named after the star of the movie because it appeared to be the same breed as the dog in the well-known movie.

Although they didn't know it when they initially came across Benji, they soon after saw a puppy that looked like a splitting image of Benji hurrying along after the distraught dog. It turns out that the puppy was one of Benji's very own puppies.

Fortunately for the pair of pups, they were treated by the group of rescue shelter volunteers within minutes of coming across them.

Veterinarians and vet techs struggled with keeping both of them alive in the days following their rescue.

They eventually nursed Benji back to health, though the poor dog's one and only puppy passed away. Fortunately, Benji lives together with six dogs as a happy family.

Have you ever come across a homeless dog? Would you ever try to save a dog as disheveled as Benji? Let us know in the comments and pass this along to your friends and family to make them smile today!
