Homeless Couple Take Shelter From Freezing Temperatures At A Church, Then The Pastor Marries Them

Last week's polar vortex affected a large part of the country. In most of Minnesota, wind chills were dangerously cold. The "feels like" temperature was in the range of -40 to -80 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the state.

Just a couple of moments in that type of cold could lead to frostbite, hypothermia or death. A local church, St. Andrew’s Church in Mahtomedi, Minnesota, has operated a shelter for the homeless for a long time.

During extreme weather, the church's shelter is typically packed full of people in need.

Reyn Waldvogel and Steve Martin had been sleeping in their car at a rest stop. Overnight, their breath would form ice on the inside of the car. The polar vortex's cold made staying in their car a life-or-death situation.

They sought shelter at St. Andrew's Church. When they arrived at the shelter, they were welcomed, given new clothes and a hot meal.

When the church pastor greeted Reyn Waldvogel and Steve Martin, he saw that they were in love and committed to one another. He offered to marry them in the church's chapel.

The couple had no idea of how much goodness the pastor and church community would have to offer them. It is a moment that they will remember for eternity.
