Former First Lady and Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton recently opened up about her husband's affair, and her decision to stay with him despite his infidelity.

In an interview with Good Morning America, Clinton described staying with her husband after his affair as the “gutsiest” thing she’s ever done.

"I think the gutsiest thing I've ever done - well, personally - make the decision to stay in my marriage,” she said. “Publicly, politically - run for president and keep going. Just get up every day and keep going."

Clinton was accompanied by her daughter Chelsea at the interview, where they promoted their new book 'The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience'.

"Oh, goodness. I think I'm so overwhelmed by my mother's answer that I'm a bit out of words,” Said Chelsea in the interview. “I'm so proud to be her daughter."

In 1998, it was revealed that Bill Clinton had an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, who was 22 at the time. The affair lead to the former president's impeachment in 2001. In Hillary Clinton’s 2003 memoir, the 71-year-old wrote about the pain she went through at the time of the scandal.

“I could hardly breathe. Gulping for air, I started crying and yelling at him, ‘What do you mean? What are you saying? Why did you lie to me?’ ” She wrote, as cited by People. “He just stood there saying over and over, ‘I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I was trying to protect you and Chelsea.’ I was dumbfounded, heartbroken and outraged that I’d believed him at all,” she continued.

She then went on to describe her decision to stay with her husband then was the “most difficult thing she had ever done.”

“By now I knew I wanted our marriage to last if it could because I loved Bill and I realized how much I cherished the years we had spent together. I knew that I could not have parented Chelsea alone as well as we had together.”
