When Heather Bolint decided to embark on a 2,190-mile journey along the Appalachian Trail, she thought that she would be making the trek from Maine to Georgia on her own. Her plans changed when the self-proclaimed “chicken whisperer” met Eddie along the way.

Heather had been planning her Appalachian Trail trip for a while, and she was thrilled to finally get started. The journey began rather unpleasantly in Maine where she had to endure numerous mosquitoes and high humidity levels for many long miles.

As she made her way south along the trail, she came across a polish-crested rooster who clearly was not native to the area.

Before the trip began, Heather already had an affinity for chickens. In fact, her friends and family were not at all surprised that she of all people would find a chicken in the middle of the woods.

Heather knew immediately that the rooster did not belong in the area, and she decided to find a safe home for him.

Because of her remote location, she did not have cell phone service and was unable to call animal control immediately. Heather decided to take the rooster with her.

Heather and her rooster, who she named Eddie, traveled 42 miles on foot together before she could find him a safe place to live. Over the miles traveled, they bonded, and Heather was sad to finally turn him over to a safe home. Eddie found his new home at the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary. They already had an animal named Eddie, so the rooster was renamed Mason.

While relinquishing this beautiful rooster to the sanctuary in Maryland was a sad experience for Heather, she is nonetheless glad that she was in the right place at the right time. She believes that she was placed in that situation for a bigger reason and was thrilled to be the one who could rescue the rooster and take him to safety.
