High Schoolers' Creative Rendition Of "Hallelujah" As Silent Monks Has The Audience In Stitches

Being a silent monk is difficult – especially when you’re dying to break out in song!

While we’re not sure how often this is actually a problem for the religious men, a group of high school students recently used the idea to bring some laughs to their school’s Christmas performance. The result was a hilarious skit and a viral video that is sweeping across the internet.

The group of students arrived on stage dressed in dark robes with their heads covered by the hooded capes in true monk fashion. When the music started, the audience wasn’t exactly sure how they would tackle the song, but they didn’t have to wait long to find out

As soon as the music began, the fake monks began to reach for poster boards that displayed the lyrics to the familiar song “The Hallelujah Chorus”. Rather than singing along to the music, they lifted the written lyrics along with the recording, struggling to drop them and lift them as the words were being sung by the recording.

It quickly became obvious that lifting signs can take just as much practice as singing – especially when the music picked up its tempo! The students scrambled to switch from one board to another and display them in sync with the music.

Watching the students struggle to keep up with the words as the music sped along, the audience began to break out in laughter. The sight was simply more than they could handle! The chuckles became outright laughs at times. By the end of the song, the crowd was roaring with applause.

Who would think that being a silent monk would be such a challenge? We sure are glad that this group thought to put together such an uproarious Christmas performance, and we’re just as thankful that someone decided to record it and upload it online. Clearly the internet agrees, because it has over 21 million views!
