High School Wrestler Helps To Detain Man Suspected Of Kidnapping At Gas Station

In March 2020, a father from New Mexico got to experience that fear and have his hopes rewarded with a heroic incident involving his son.

The phone call was the kind that every parent dreads. It was from his son's mother. There had been a fight at a gas station. Their son was wrestling a man who had been trying to hurt some kids. His wife relayed to him that the message didn't say anything else and now she couldn't reach their son.

After ending the conversation with his wife, the man was filled with worry. His son, Canaan, was 16 and on spring break in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The idea of his son wrestling with a stranger at a gas station made him anxious. He tried to call Canaan, but couldn't get through to him. The wife had mentioned the name of the gas station, so the father decided to drive out to that spot.

When the father arrived at the gas station, he found it to be locked. Repeated calls to his son had resulted in no answers. There was no sign of his truck at the gas station or in the surrounding town. The man's thoughts started racing. Was his son in the hospital? Would he find him at the police station? There wasn't a clear answer as to where he might be or what had happened.

He decided to try to call the gas station again. Finally, there was an answer on the other end. The man described Canaan to the woman who answered and told her that his son had been involved in an altercation with someone there. The woman went on to describe what had happened in detail.

According to the woman, who worked at the store, an "evil man" had walked into the gas station and was intent on kidnapping three children. As he was attempting to grab them, other people tried to intervene by throwing bottles at him, but he persisted. This evil man apparently beat up those who were trying to save the children. The clerk stated that they knew the police were not close and that they were in danger of losing these children.

She continued her story by telling the father that was when Canaan walked into the store. She said he didn't hesitate and wrestled the evil man to the floor. He held him down until police arrived.

Apparently, Canaan had heard the commotion from a gas station across the street and had run over to help. Eventually, Canaan's dad finally got in touch with him. When asked about the situation, the young man stated that he just did what was right. Relieved that his son was okay, the father stated that he was proud of the person he had raised.

This story reminds us that there are many people out there who are still concerned with helping others and do the right thing. In a world where it seems like all the headlines are negative, this is a welcome change of pace.
