Teachers do a lot for their students. Many of these teachers go above and beyond the minimum requirements for keeping their students motivated and excited about learning.

About the Teacher

In some places, students come from homes where they do not get the support they need in order to learn and thrive.

They may not have the adult leaders that they need to look up to and use as mentors.

Joshua Murray, a teacher in Arizona, wanted to make sure that his students had someone in their lives to look up to and trust.

Promises Made

Joshua Murray teaches English and AVID courses at Agua Fria High School in Avondale, Arizona. He is in his third year of teaching. Arizona has a teacher shortage, and Murray wants to make sure that his students have the best education and teachers available to them.

He knows that a lot of his students would not have enough money to pay tuition for college. Even taking out loans might not be feasible for some of the students and their families.

He made a promise to the 28 students in his classes that if they earned more than $5,000 in college tuition scholarships, he would get tattoos of their names.

Promises Kept

The students earned more than $5,000 each in college tuition scholarships. True to his word, Murray got their names tattooed.

He got the tattoos on the left side of his rib cage. It is a large tattoo, and it includes additional artwork and text.

The colorful tattoo is a daily reminder of promises made and promises kept for him and his students. This promise is one that his students are unlikely to forget.
