A heartbreaking scene awaited officers at a residence in Port Charlotte, Fla., a gorgeous city of 55,000 located 100 miles south of Tampa. They had been receiving reports of a man acting "strangely" in the area before coming across Khyler Edman, a 15-year-old boy who had allegedly been killed by him.

On Sept. 26, police officers responded to calls related to that man, but he couldn't be found. However, a few minutes later, another call came in, reporting a home burglary. This time, the officers were ultimately successful in discovering and apprehending the man. At that time, they discovered that he had received a number of stab wounds. Confused, the officers started more thoroughly searching the neighborhood to see what else they could find and soon discovered another home that had signs of forced entry, indicating that it likely had involved that man as well. It was here where they found Edman.

At an ensuing press conference, Bill Prummell, Charlotte County's sheriff, said that a "violent encounter" had occurred there and that it appeared that Edman had been trying to protect his home and sister when he died. Sadly, reports have surfaced that the 5-year-old girl had witnessed the altercation.

As expected, friends and family members and, well, everybody who has heard this story has hailed the boy as a hero. The man who was arrested for these crimes had also been arrested dozens of times in the past eight years and has spent time behind bars on numerous theft and drug charges. He was on probation at the time of this incident.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Edman family! Kyhler Edman was a true hero - be sure to pass this article along to help keep his memory alive!
