A man recently garnered admiration on the internet after a heroic and touching act that proved that human kindness still exists. Chris MacRitchie did not hesitate to jump into an icy tributary of the Winooski River when he spotted a stranger’s puppy struggling to wade through the cold waters. The moment the rescue occurred, MacRitchie’s son, Ace, captured it on camera. With the extremely low temperatures on a quiet day, no one could have predicted that a viral video shared on social media would come from that moment.
What started out as a casual day at a Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru for MacRitchie and his son turned into a heartwarming moment after Ace spotted a pup struggling to stay afloat in freezing waters nearby. In the video, MacRitchie could be seen approaching the embankment where the helpless puppy was fighting to escape the water. With no time to waste, MacRitchie – who has dogs of his own – stepped into the water fully clothed in his T-shirt, sweater and boots. While he called out to grab the puppy’s attention, his wife could be heard in the background encouraging him to save the panicked puppy.
After rescuing the puppy from the other side of the frozen tributary, he lifted it out of the water and carried it over to his wife. Luckily, the contact details of the dog owner, Morgan Cerasoli, were on the dog tag and she was contacted promptly.

Recalling the brave moment to the Associated Press, MacRitchie said:
“It was like one of those moments everyone probably has in their life like you’re going to make a decision. I felt I was obligated to at least try to fetch this dog out of the river, as I have two dogs myself, and I would hope someone would do that for them if they were in that spot.”
He explained that although the cold water was daunting, the experience wasn’t as terrible as he thought it would be.
“The only real stress I had about it wasn’t getting in the cold water. It was the depth. I did not know if it was 20 feet deep or it was 2 feet deep,” MacRitchie explained. “When I broke through and I got on my feet and it was like waist-high, I was actually relieved by that. In my mind, during the moment, I thought, ‘OK this isn’t that bad. Yeah, it’s cold, but I feel this is a very doable situation.’”
Cerasoli also sat down for an interview, expressing her relief, gratitude and joy at finally reuniting with her beloved pup. She said the pup, Arizona, had mostly recovered from the ordeal.
“I started crying, and I told him, ‘Oh, my God, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you. Let me pull a U-turn and I’m coming right back.’”
She also commended MacRitchie for his selfless act of bravery, saying:
“It’s brave, it’s selfless, it’s commendable. It’s everything that I think that we were on this Earth to be,” she said. “Sometimes it feels like that’s very rare these days.”
