A police dog is being praised for finding a missing boy in just 10 minutes.

Bandit, a K-9 police dog in Ohio, was dispatched with a deputy from the sheriff's office. They'd received a call from a distressed family about the disappearance of a three-year-old boy. He'd wandered away from home and no one could find him.

Bandit leaped into action. He was given the boy's scent, and according to witnesses, it was immediately apparent that his nose had picked up the trail. "Watching this track, you could tell very well that Bandit had the scent of the child and was well on his way to finding him," the sheriff's office said in a statement on Facebook.

This might not come as a surprise to people who know dogs. Dogs have more than 225 million scent receptors in their noses; by comparison, humans only have five million. This is the reason why they're deployed by soldiers and police officers to do work that human sniffers can't.

Bandit was certainly on the job this time. He located the boy less than a mile from his home, and the search took just 10 minutes. The wayward tot was happily reunited with his family. "This is exactly why we have dog units," the sheriff's office said.

Bandit's human handlers were so proud of his success that they took to Facebook to share the news. Within days, the post had attracted almost 10,000 likes and shares.

Most people were full of praise for Bandit. "Officers are so wonderful, but no one can take the place of these special noses, our beloved, K-9's!" said one commenter.

"Awesome! With all the terrible stories with unhappy endings, this warms my heart," said another. "Wonderful job by Bandit and the Deputy. Thank you both for your service and God Bless you!"

Some people wanted to make sure that Bandit got rewarded for a job well done. "Good boy, Bandit! (Please give him cookies!)"

A few people were tickled by the photo that was uploaded with the story. In it, Bandit sits in front of an American flag at the police station. He's wearing his K-9 vest and has a happy, doggy smile on his face. "Bandit DOES look very proud of himself!!" laughed one commenter. "Well done Bandit!"
