Heroic Firefighters Rescue Dog After Slipping Into Icy River

It was just a typical freezing day at the beginning of December when the dog’s owner in Saskatchewan, Canada, decided to let his large brown pup off the leash. As the dog wandered around his owner during the walk and checked out the local scenery, it was nothing new. Then the canine decided to wander off onto the thin ice covering the local creek and that’s when tragedy struck—the ice broke and the dog plunged under.

Realizing if the creek could not hold the dog’s weight, it would not hold his own, the owner immediately pulled out his cell phone and called the Swift Current Fire Department. He knew it was only a matter of time before his dog would either freeze to death or be swept away by an undercurrent and his dog needed help now.

The fire department responded in a timely manner and quickly improvised a rescue plan. Tying one of its members to the end of a long rope, the brave firefighter low crawled on his elbows out onto the ice until he reached the struggling pup.

Wrapping his arms around the dog, the two then plunged into the freezing waters as the ice gave away beneath them. The crew on the shore, however, maintained their calm. They started the work of pulling on the guide rope and dragging the dog and man out of the creek and safely to shore.

Thankfully neither man nor beast was seriously harmed by the ordeal. The dog was reunited with its owner and the firefighters returned to their other duties. Yet the fire chief of Swift Current would post a video of the daring rescue on the fire department’s Facebook page with an admonishing reminder that ice is often untrustworthy in the wintertime.
