Heroic Firefighter Describes ‘Surreal’ Experience Rescuing Infant Left In An Alley

When it comes to recognizing heroes, firefighters are some of the most respected people that encapsulate this title. Every day at work, they risk their lives to help save those from dangerous and sometimes almost fatal incidents. These brave men and women show up time and again to rescue those in need and make a true, positive impact on the lives of others.

A firefighter from Chicago, Illinois, came to the rescue of a newborn baby on a hot day in August 2021. Matthew Lang, the firefighter, received a call about the dire situation. Lang and the rest of the firefighting unit urgently reacted as they were unsure what they would find when they arrived on the scene.

Lang was hoping for the best but preparing for the worst as he made his way to where the newborn baby was. When Lang arrived at the address, he saw a woman frantically waving her arms about to indicate where he needed to go. He then found the newborn swaddled in blankets and a rosary in the bottom drawer of a disheveled dresser that had been left in an alleyway.

Several questions ran through Lang’s mind about how the baby got there, who left the baby there and if the newborn was OK. Fortunately, the last question was quickly answered as the baby began stirring a bit, showing that he was, in fact, alive.

The firefighter, who is also a father, was overwhelmed with emotions and felt a strong connection to the child, taking all the necessary steps to ensure he was safe and well.

When Lang arrived in the alley, he noticed a woman waving him over, according to CBS 2 Chicago. “I look out the window, and I just see this woman, hysterical, waving her arms,” he explained. She pointed at the dresser drawers — one of which contained something incredibly valuable inside.

There, Lang found a newborn baby. Someone had placed the baby, wrapped in blankets, in the bottom drawer. “We don’t know who put the baby there, but whoever did left a rosary,” Lang said. “My mind went to ease as soon as I saw that baby moving and crying. It was almost surreal.”

CBS 2 Chicago reported that the baby could not have been more than a couple of days old and still had its umbilical cord attached. Lang, a father of two, felt a real connection to the child. He said:

“I carried him into the ambulance when they arrived, and I didn’t want to let him go. He did open his eyes and looked around the ambulance, smiled a little bit, holding onto our fingers. He looked me right in the eye. Those big brown eyes, I’ll never forget it. Holding that little guy wrapped up in my arms, and I just kept thinking how familiar it was.”

The ambulance took the newborn to Lurie Children’s Hospital, and Lang went home. However, he uploaded social media posts pleading for parents to think about the consequences of their actions in situations like this and encouraged them to take unwanted babies to a hospital, firehouse, police station or church. People praised Lang for his thoughtful words, and some hopeful couples even reached out, asking for information to adopt the baby. Lang explained, “It resolidifies my faith in humanity.”
